How to use the clicker in class

How do I login the remote when I try to use it in the classroom?

When you come to class you MUST login your remote to the correct channel number for the classroom. These remotes are radio frequency transmitters and they must transmit on the correct radio channel in order to record your answer for your class. Your instructor will tell you what channel number to use for your classroom. There should also be a sign posted on the wall in the room.

Do I need to login every time I come to class?

If you ONLY use the remote in one class and never change the channel number the remote is supposed to remember the last channel it was set on so in theory you could login once for the course and then just press answers when you come to class. It is recommended to log in the remote EACH time you come to class as soon as you get in the room just to confirm it has fresh batteries and is ready to work. If you use the remote in different classrooms you will have to change the remotes channel number for EACH classroom and login to that class.

I've now answered questions in class, how do I check my scores afterwards?

This is unique per each class. Some professors will post grades in your BlackBoard course, some on their websites, and some have other methods. Check your course syllabus for more information. You can also go to TechZone to test out your clicker signal.

Directions for XR Clicker Model: (Spring 2008 and later)

Connecting to the correct channel:

  • Click on the Menu button and select Change Channel
  • Enter the channel for the room
  • Click enter (this is in the upper left)
  • You will see a confirmation that you are connected to that particular channel

Giving an answer:

  • If polling is open, you simply click on the number or letter of your desired answer (for example, 3/C)
  • You will see a confirmation on your screen that you entered and sent 3/C with a checkmark by your entry

Checking battery strength:

You will see a battery strength meter on your screen. Make sure to have at least half strength before going to class. Many classed require that you have a spare battery available or purchase a new one each semester. Check your syllabus for details.

Things to avoid:

  • You are not going to use the SEND INFO feature of this clicker. Instead, your clicker ID should be entered into the iCampus Portal and downloaded with the roster by your professor.
  • Do not click on the ?. This feature is not useful in the version of TP we are utilizing on campus. It is more useful in areas where faculty cannot interact with their students such as in multiple room situations or using Vpad where students can post text questions.

Connecting to the correct channel:

  • Click on the CH button
  • Enter the channel for the room
  • click the CH button again to finish
  • On the screen you will see the the channel number listed at the top of the screen

Giving an answer:

  • If polling is open, you simply click on the number or letter of your desired answer (for example, 3/C)
  • You will see a confirmation on your screen that you entered and sent 3/C

Directions for Old Clicker Model: (previous to Sping 2008)

Connecting to the correct channel:

  1. Press the "GO" button in the lower left corner of the remote. You should get a flashing red and green light appearing on the remote. If the flashing red and green light does not appear be sure you have removed the plastic packing strips sticking out of the back of the new remote.
  2. While the light is flashing red and green press the classroom radio channel number. For example, if the channel number is 80 you would press 8, 0. If the channel number was 7 you would press 0,7 because each channel number is a two digit code (thus 0,7 instead of just 7). Once the channel number is entered the flashing red/green light should turn solid yellow.
  3. Now press "GO" again while the light is solid yellow and the light should turn solid green to confirm you are logged into the correct classroom radio channel.
  4. So in summary, the login for the radio channel in the classroom is press "GO", see a red/green flashing light, enter the two digit channel number, see a yellow light and press "GO" again and see a solid green light.

To review:

1. Go (flashing red and green lights)

2. First Channel number (yellowish light)

3. Second Channel number (yellowing light)

4. Go (solid green light that turns off)

For example, if you are in a room with Channel 67 you would do the following:

Go - 6 - 7 - Go

Note: Make sure you click the button firmly but do not hold the button down (otherwise it may register the number multiple times...).

 

Ok, I'm in class now and my remote is properly logged into the correct radio channel. How do I respond to a question my instructor asks in class?

If you have properly logged in your remote to the correct classroom radio channel all you have to do to answer a question in class is press the button for your answer. For example, if you think the correct answer is "3" or "C" then press that key. You should see a solid green light on your remote that tells you the answer was recorded by the computer. If you have NOT sent your Device ID to your professor or they have not added your Device ID to their participant list, then you will not get a green light.

You can change your answer while polling is open as well.

Help, I did not see a green light when I pressed my answer to a question in class! What is wrong?

If you pressed an answer to a question in class but did not get a green light and instead saw multiple flashes of yellow lights and then a red light your answer was not recorded. To solve this problem go back and do the login procedure again for your remote (GO, Channel #, GO....).

Once the professor has CLOSED the question, you will not be able to answer or change your answer.
